Seventeenth Sunday of Ordinary Time
The Treasure and the Pearl
In today's Gospel, we are reminded that the Kingdom of
Heaven is a treasure that requires full dedication, just like a
pearl of great value. The man with the hidden treasure and
the merchant with the pearl that he has discovered know the
worth of these treasures and are willing to sacrifice
everything to own them.
If we take the example from the Gospel, the fisherman catches every possible fish, thus making it clear that the Kingdom embraces both good and bad. The Last Day will become the time for the separation of what has real worth. The challenge we are facing every day is that we should act in
accordance with the expectations of God’s Kingdom and, thus, be able to appreciate the gifts of his love and goodness.
According to Jesus, the Kingdom of God cannot be understood unless it is both learned and practiced. Those who learn the ways of God are masters of the house, bringing together the old and the new: the wisdom given in the Scriptures and the light derived from their life experiences to share with others the richness of God's kingdom.
Let us think about what really matters to us. Are we ready to lose everything so we can have the greatest treasure ever, which is God's love?
